Independence
Dr. Maria Montessori famously said to "follow the child." Unlike traditional schools of thought, we approach learning with an open mind and respect for the child's instincts. Following Dr. Montessori's teachings, we trust that children know what is needed for optimal learning and development. An attractive and nurturing learning environment encourages children to select materials to engage with for as long as they like during the work cycle. Children are provided the time and space to engage with these uninterrupted activities to increase their attention span and allow for self-directed learning. However, when children face a challenging, developmentally appropriate task, information and gentle guidance toward mastery is provided.
Differentiated Instruction
A Montessori education provides children with the skill set to navigate our ever-changing world. According to Dr. Montessori, creativity, confidence, and curiosity emerges when children are allowed to choose learning activities. We follow each child’s interest by allowing them to select materials to engage with and using differentiated instruction to cater to their unique needs. Regimented lessons are unhelpful to the learning process since learning is neither linear nor restricted to a particular pace. Tailoring teaching methods to meet the needs of each child builds their confidence and foundation for conceptual thinking.
Whole Child Approach
Social, emotional, sensorial, and practical life development are as important as academics in the Montessori environment. We prepare children to become global citizens by modeling grace and courtesy social conventions, caring for others and the environment, and conflict resolution. As children observe and practice these behaviors, they begin to understand empathy, collaboration, and communication.
Lifetime Learning
The Montessori environment provides children freedom within parameters set by their teacher. By encouraging children to pursue activities that fascinate them, they become active participants in the learning process.
